Our programs cover 30 public primary schools located within Wamunyu and Yathui in the Machakos district of Kenya. With an exception of one school (a boarding facility catering to the needs of children with physical and mental disabilities), all are regular day schools (pre-school through standard 8) serving the educational needs of normal children. Average enrollment is 310 pupils, with only eight teachers typically assigned to each school, and while the government is responsible for providing teachers and books, the responsibility for building construction and other supplies falls to the parents. Common subjects include math, language arts (i.e., English, Kiswahili), social studies and religious studies, and all students participate in extra curricular activities that focus on games and athletics. After the final grade, children sit for a national examination and if they receive a passing grade, move on to secondary school.
